The Limitations of my Vocal Paralysis

There’s much more to a good voice over artist than a good post production and recording setup. Nail down the specifics! Here's the thing with authenticity...

What do you do when you are born with a major setback?

If you didn’t know already, I have vocal paralysis. My left vocal chord has been completely paralysed from birth and as a result, my vocal chords do not function or allow me to speak.

So, how do I do it?

Introducing vestibular folds! These little muscles sit just below your vocal chords, and mine have, with zero input from myself, mimicked the movement of the vocal chords. This allows me to speak.

But there are limitations…

My voice isn’t especially loud. I have a husky quality to my voice which means my characters always have a touch of rasp to their voice.

This is something that has cost me jobs.

But I don’t let it define me. Because my success comes from finding work where a more characterful voice is useful. Where clients want someone who sounds real and warm. Where clients want something that truly stands out.

That’s where I come in.

My Twitter handle is @huskyvinclaire, so you could say I’ve embraced this quality. But honestly, I had no choice.

Adapt and overcome.

What limitation have you turned into an asset?
